Are Pediatric Nurses Responsible Only for Children?

Nurses can have specializations and one of those is pediatric nursing. Pediatric nursing focuses on caring for infants and children. Their training is mostly on how to care for different illness and sickness related to children. You can become an ICU pediatric nurse and help children in very fragile situations or work in the pediatric ward of a hospital. The type of job will depend on you.

Are pediatric nurses only for children? Pediatric nurses are highly trained, more knowledgeable, and skilled in caring for children because this is their specialty. Nonetheless, this does not mean that a pediatric nurse is clueless about helping the older patients. All nurses have to undergo nursing training so they should know the general and basic tasks a nurse should do. But if it boils down to specialty, pediatric nurses will always be assigned to caring for children over other age groups.

Do not think that your job as a pediatric nurse is limited because there are different types of jobs for pediatric nurses. As a pediatric nurse, you can work in different environments aside from the hospital. Where there are children, your services are needed. This goes to say that if you plan to become a pediatric nurse, you should love children. In addition, you should be very patient and have a good sense of humor. If you have these qualities, look at some of the pediatric nursing jobs that will be the right fit for you.

  • School Nurse- Before school nurses were only known to give band-aids and minor medical treatment but today, their tasks are complex. Medically complex students who did not attend school before are now streamlined which is why trained school nurses are needed. They have to deal with complex illness, medical regimens, and treatments.
  • Home Healthcare Nurse- Some children cannot leave home because of their fragile condition. Such situation needs a home healthcare pediatric nurse who will provide 24-hour care for child patients. You can choose to work as a home healthcare nurse or become a case manager.
  • Pediatric ER Nurse- A pediatric ER nurse is not for the weak at heart. This is a fast-paced job and may break your heart at certain times. You will deal with children who suffer from chronic illness, abuse, accidents, and those who are mentally ill. Situations will change rapidly in the emergency room so you should be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared.

Again, pediatric nurses have gone through general nursing training so they can attend to other age groups as well. But for the most part, they will work with children because they are more skilled and trained to do so.
