Nursing Degree: What Requirements Should You Have?

Your dream of becoming a nurse is just within reach and it starts by enrolling in a nursing school. Every nurse will need formal education and training because nurses deal with people’s health and lives. A nurse should always be prepared to help anytime and anywhere which is why you need to be educated and trained properly. Finding a nursing school or nursing educational institution is the easy part but finding quality nursing programs is the challenge. Aside from this, you have to make sure that you have all the requirements needed in order to get in the nursing program.

What Are The Common Requirements Needed?

  • You must know that the more prestigious the nursing school is, the stricter they are when it comes to requirements. Most schools will require that students pass the Test of Essential Academic Skill or TEAS. This test is to check your English, Math and Science skills. Nursing schools may also require that you take the Health Education System Exam or HESI to check your health and medical knowledge. Some nursing colleges will ask you to take the National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Exam.
  • For high school fresh graduates, pre-requisites to be eligible for application to a nursing program includes 4 years of English in high school, 3-4 years of Math, 2-4 years of Science and 3-4 years of Social Science.
  • If you have finished high school already and is missing some courses to be able to go to nursing school, you can take these classes at the community college. Nursing schools will require SAT or ACT scores but if you have an associate degree in nursing already, you can skip taking these exams.
  • You should not have any criminal record.
  • You should have complete immunizations.
  • You should have CRP certification.

All these requirements vary from one nursing school to another and often, it will depend on the nursing degree program you will take too. There are degree programs that will only require a high school diploma or GED scores to get in. Nonetheless, a nursing school with strict requirements is a good sign. These schools prove high quality education and want to make sure that the students are qualified and eligible.

Do your research and give yourself time to prepare for the requirements needed. Try to research ahead of time so you can prepare early too. This way, you have months to prepare before the deadline for the admissions and there is no need to rush anything.
